Plot: From the biggest festival to the smallest church social, Kenny Smyth delivers porta-loos to them all. Ignored and unappreciated, he is one of the cogs in society’s machinery; a knight in shining overalls taking care of business with his faithful ‘Splashdown’ crew. Follow Kenny as he tackles every septic challenge that comes his way, culminating in a pilgrimage to that Mecca of waste management, the International Pumper and Cleaner Expo in Nashville Tennessee – or as Kenny affectionately calls it, “Poo HQ”. With fly-on-the-wall honesty and wit, ‘KENNY’ lifts the lid on one of Australia’s roughest diamonds as he juggles family tensions, fatherhood and sewage with charm, humour and unflinching dignity. “It takes a certain kind of person to do what I do… No-one’s ever impressed; no-one’s ever fascinated… If you’re a fireman, all the kids will want to jump on the back of the truck and follow you to a fire. There’s going to be no kids willing to do that with me. So, I don’t do it to impress people – it’s a job, it’s my trade, and I actually think I’m pretty good at it.” – Kenny Smyth Part philosopher, part comedian and all heart, KENNY is living proof that in sewage, like life, the best will always rise to the top.

Is it religiously correct for parents to apply a painful treatment?
When Alda was seven years old he contracted polio. To combat the disease, his parents administered a painful treatment regimen developed by Sister Elizabeth Kenny that consisted of applying hot woolen blankets to his limbs and stretching his muscles.[2] This allowed him to recover from most effects of the disease.

 Complete Rubbish

I dont really understand the question… most treatments are pretty painful, whether religiously correct or not. If that treatment helped then that’s great.
Fuddster | Feb 07, 2010

Yes, his parents loved him enough to allow him to suffer a short time for the greater good (of recovering his ability to walk).
It was not only morally/religiously correct (because they did what they were instructed to do to give him the greatest chance of recovering his natural ability), but also scientifically sound.
I contracted polio in 1959 at the age of 2 1/2. My parents had never heard of Sister Kenny’s treatment. So they morally did right by listening to the doctors practicing in my part of the USA -first giving me a spinal tap, then putting my leg in an immobile cast. But they trusted that the doctors were giving me the best treatment at the time, thus, they acted out of love and were religiously/morally correct in following the treatment they were giving me at the Children’s Country Home.
Now, of course, we know that giving a spinal tap to a suspected polio case has the potential to make the paralysis permanent, and that putting a cast on the affected limb is the worst thing you can possibly do to a recent polio victim.
But my parents were morally correct and so were Alan Alda’s parents. Fortunately, Alan Alda recovered. Perhaps I did not suffer as much at first (I don’t remember the painfull spinal tap), but my leg is still paralyzed after 50 years.

Would the Civilian National Security Force be the same thing as the Volunteer Police Force?
President Elect Obama stated his plans to double the size of the Peace Corps and nearly quadruple the size of AmeriCorps and the size of the nation’s military services, he made this pledge: "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Would the Civilian National Security Force be the same thing as the Volunteer Police Force?

No. It will be a Federalized police force. Meaning the government in Washington will control it. Not local people and courts.

It has the potential to lead to tyranny and government oppression to opposition. We will have to stay tuned.

All you have to do is look at history and the conduct of Federal Police of other countries. All tryrants had thier own police.

Anyone Know the Title Of this Story? (Literature)?
I read a short story last year in English and i loved it. But i cant remember the title. It was about the future where the law stated that everyone had to be equal. It was basically communist. There was an old couple watching tv and everytime one of them had a rebellious thought, there was a loud ringing in their ears or something. Everyone had to wear sacks of weight and masks to make them ugly. There were ballerinas on Tv. There was an escaped convict that the title of the story is named after. He was the couple’s son, but the couple couldnt remember or something… Anyways i want to say that the title has the word HARRISON but im not sure. Please and thank you for the title of this short story.

It’s called Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut

In the story, social equality has been achieved by handicapping the more intelligent, athletic or beautiful members of society. For example, strength is handicapped by the requirement to carry weight, beauty by the requirement to wear a mask and so on. This is due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments to the United States Constitution. This process is central to the society, designed so that no one will feel inferior to anyone else. Handicapping is overseen by the United States Handicapper General, Diana Moon-Glampers.

Harrison Bergeron, the protagonist of the story, has exceptional intelligence, strength, and beauty, and thus has to bear enormous handicaps. These include headphones that play distracting noises, three hundred pounds of weight strapped to his body, forty pounds of birdshot around his neck, eyeglasses designed to give him headaches, a rubber ball on his nose, black caps on his teeth, and shaven eyebrows. Despite these societal handicaps, he is able to invade a TV station, declare himself Emperor

What kind of fish is at Santee lakes and what kind of a hook should I use?

Largemouth Bass (Catch and Release Only) – so the easiest way would be to use a barbless hook about size 8

Rainbow Trout and bluegill – can be kept, 5 apiece. I use salmon egg hooks, the smallest ones you can find

Channel Catfish – size 4 circle hook

Bass, trout, catfish, bluegills and carps. Lakes 3, 4 & 5 are great for bass fishing. Catfish are stocked during the summer months and trouts are stocked during the winter months. Right now, it is trout season, so bring a size 16 treble hook and use Powerbait with 4-6lb test line. You can also fish for bass this time of year, use crankbaits for bass. Water is getting colder so the bluegills maybe out deep now. Catfish can be caught all year long so you can get yourself some whisker hooks (catfish hooks) and use cut mackerel or shrimp. As for carps, sorry I’ve never fish for them and I have no idea how to. Good luck, it’s a great chain of little lakes and I’ve had lots of success there.

Have you ever read any of these books? Would you please let me know what you thought of them?
This is part of my degree and I’d be grateful if you could let me know what you thought of these children’s books:-

The Tulip Touch by Anne Fine
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum
The Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit
Skellig by David Almond
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken
The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley
Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce
The Sword in the Stone by TH White
I have read them all – I’m asking for other people’s opinions on them.
Please don’t bothering answering if you haven’t read any of them, I’ll just report you.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum
- I read it as a child, in hospital. Was v puzzled that there was no mention of anything being Over the Rainbow.

Skellig by David Almond
- I read when it came out. It’s superb. Creepy, urgent. A little too much Wm Blake, perhaps. But I’m always recommending it to everyone.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken
- I enjoyed it, but I believe others in the series are better. *Night Birds over Nantucket*?

The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley
- I read it as a child. Didn’t care for it much. It seemed very precious and remote.

Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce
- I’ve read it 2 or 3 times. Loved it each time. There’s a genuine sense of eeriness and loss that you don’t find in many stories where children stray into other worlds.

The Sword in the Stone by TH White
- He’s superb, though I prefer some of his other books. His short stories are not much read, I think, and really captivating.

I thought they were great, thanks for asking.
Maybe you should read them then you could have your own opinion.
england til i die | Jun 04, 2008

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum
its ok, not the best. Worst than Harry Potter
Lily | Jun 04, 2008

nope havent read any of them but sword and the stone is a good film
Ali | Jun 04, 2008

The Tulip Touch is a wonderful book…it is quite dark for it’s age range…but many adults forget that children like stories which deal with fear and with kids who don’t have kind parents….
Daisyhill | Jun 04, 2008

never heard of those books before
OhCheezy | Jun 04, 2008

The Dark Is Rising was good, the movie sucked though.
Jebus | Jun 04, 2008

I’ve read The Water Babies, and The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. They’re both lovely books.

I especially like The Water Babies; the language is beautiful and sometimes very poetic. I also like the naivity of Tom. In fact the whole story has a certain naive quality to it that makes it really sweet.
princessbi2006 | Jun 04, 2008

We went throught the Sword in the stone at School (many many years ago).

Have to say i didn’t really enjoy it. The contrivance of Robin Hood appearing seemed very forced. Also the story itself bore only a faint resemblance to Arthurian legend.

Most people will recognise the stories from the filmed versions, which often bear little resemblance to the original books.
MARK S | Jun 04, 2008

I read Tom’s Midnight Garden when I was 8 and I thought it was okay. didn’t think it was the most fantastic thing ever ( prob cause I was only 8 lol)
ummmm my friend told me she liked the water babies
i liked "the sword in the stone" it was boring in some parts but overall i thought it was good.
"the dark is rising" someone recommended that book to me once when i was in year 5. I couldn’t get past the first 20 pages.
and the other books I have never read them
kina789 | Jun 04, 2008

I think I read the Treasure Seekers but can’t remember it. The Water Babies I started but never finished. I loved Tom’s Midnight Garden and how things (clock and skates) passed between the characters and how both Tom and Hetty were ‘real’ and dreams/ghosts at the same time.
claude | Jun 04, 2008

The Water Babies.Abook with a clear moral story.Written in good English.
HELEN LOOKING4 | Jun 04, 2008

Read the Wolves of WC as an adult & enjoyed it.
Read the Water babies as a young child – think it still influences me now!
Read Tom’s Midnight Garden as a young teenager & enjoyed it.
Read the Sword in the Stone & didn’t like it.
anwen55 | Jun 04, 2008

The wonderful wizard of oz was an excellent book. There was a huge difference between it and the movie.
